The fantasy genre is a form of speculative fiction set in a fictional universe. They are typically inspired by real world folklore and myth. Fantasmic elements were typically written as part of tales for children. Phantastes is considered the first fantasy novel for adults, written in 1858 by Scottish author George MacDonald. He was a major influence on J.R.R. Tolkien (author of The Lord of the Rings) and C.S. Lewis (author of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe). Now it is a widely popular genre for all generations, and can be enjoyed through novels, movies, television and more.
